I don’t know how many times I have said that in the last six years. I am beginning to accept that crazy is the new “normal”. So how does one cope with all the chaos on a daily basis? It’s not easy, that’s for sure. One becomes great at organization. Here are a few tips that help me in my day-to-day life at home as well as my business.
Get a calendar
We have a general calendar for the family’s activities. I have one to schedule my business hours and appointments. We even have one in the kitchen where I have meals and prep times planned!
Have set rules
In my family, everyone knows when my business hours are. They all know that those are times mom cannot be disturbed. Everyone else also has their limits on how much television, video games, etc. Living off the grid (solar power), we also have rules about what time electronics need to be turned off. I’m still working on getting the dogs to follow the rules we’ve set for them. Things like “do not take the remote off the counter, through the dog door and sit on the porch and eat it”. Or “don’t try to eat that snake”.
Everyone knows what their chores are. Who’s going to go feed the ducks and chickens? Who’s going to clean animal cages? Who makes sure the birds have food and water? Who goes to the back yard to find the remote? Everything is planned ahead of time so that nothing gets overlooked.
Plan in some fun
I definitely have some fun time scheduled in. Whatever it is – reading a good book, watching my favorite show, going out to a movie, playing Wii with the kids – I have to have that planned in. With all of the things going on at our house, it would be easy to just work all the time. The only way to stave off burn-out is to make sure to have some fun!!
This is just the tip of the iceberg for me. These are the things that keep things running smoothly at home. I am a little OCD so…. my office organization…..meal prepping….the cars….ah, subjects for another time!
